The Gallery at Flashpoint’s 2008-09 Season Opening with Anthony Cervino
No Comments »
Get a bit of culture into your ever busy life by attending The Gallery at Flashpoint’s Season Opening Reception on Friday September 5th from 6-8pm. Thanks to Cara Pomponio at the Cultural Development Corporation for getting this press release over to the Punch:
WASHINGTON, DC –The Gallery at Flashpoint is pleased to launch its 2008-2009 season with Anthony Cervino’s Anti-Plastic, the artist’s first solo exhibition in Washington, DC. Cervino transforms the parts taken from toy model kits, in concert with plastic resin and paints, to construct low-relief sculptures on canvas. Situated somewhere between wall sculptures and paintings, these chromatically reductive works are evocative of architectural structures, disaster scenes and abstract landscapes. Opening Friday, September 5, Anti-Plastic, comments on mass production, consumption and various acts of assembly.
The sculptures in Anti-Plastic are typified by three-dimensional compositions painted a uniform gray that appear to float in lightly-tinted color fields. Many of the individual components are recognizable as scraps of toys or the wiry, plastic structures typically used to contain the parts of pre-assembled model kits, such as planes or cars. Since the sculptures are wall-based and affixed to a two-dimensional surface, the viewer approaches them like a painting and the compositions thus suggest an aerial perspective. This bird’s-eye view implies a reading of the works as abstracted landscapes and perhaps more ominously, as sites of crashes, floods or warfare. Each of the sculptures is constructed with a strong sense of predetermined arrangement, but is also positively reactive to the fluidity and plasticity of the materials. In creating the works, Cervino carefully balances rigorous attention to a structured composition with a playful, but threateningly destructive element of chance provided by the liquid plastic poured onto the canvases.

Punch Pick: Party Favors by Nicole Sexton
No Comments »
Awhile back I had mentioned the new novel by former GOP fundraiser/turned international activist, Nicole Sexton, called Party Favors: A Novel of Politics and Greed. At the time, Ms. Sexton was in town promoting her book. Fortunately, I got to read it and unfortunately, it ended. Don’t you hate it when a good story comes to its close?
Party Favors is for sure a “Punch Pick”, especially with the conventions and race heating up.
Yes, it’s a juicy tell-all, but in the way of fiction of course. It’s a tale of a young up and coming party planner in New Orleans named Temple Sachet, who takes her sharp mind, quick wit, smarts and people skills all the way to the Hill to make millions for her Party, the Republicans. With graceful humor and candor, Ms. Sexton presents her readers every emotion she probably felt when she lived that life. But don’t think this is all about the professional life Temple lives. The book offers us a well-rounded view of work, romance, personal and family life when succumbing to a world that the heroine did not quite expect.
Party Favors is found in most bookstores now and definitely online. Enjoy and share this Punch Pick.

Velocity Five Restaurant Opens Second Location Tonight
No Comments »
It looks as though proprietor/businessman/restaurateur/entrepreneur Jim Speros figured out his recipe for a good thing because his “good thing”, Velocity Five Restaurant, has just produced a sister further west of its Falls Church, VA location.
Opening tonight in Potomac Falls, VA, at 5pm, is the sports bar’s second location. Velocity Five is found at the corner of Algonkian Parkway and Lowe’s Island Boulevard in the Great Falls Plaza across from the entrance to Lowe’s Island.
If you enjoyed the amenities the original offered, you are in luck. This venue will continue the tradition of rich wood finishes, dozens of flat screen HDTV’s, the much applauded menu, and cool lounge atmosphere. In addition, it boasts a 2,000 square foot outdoor patio, with a bar, tables and all-season awning. Bonus: those Northern Virginian’s who despise smoke filled bars (yes, they still have those here), this will be a non-smoking destination, as is the first Velocity Five.
Doors open tonight at 5:00 PM, and will be open daily from 11:00 AM to 2:00 AM.

If you get a chance to call her or email her, or even stop by to say good-bye and good luck, I am sure she would appreciate it.
Best of luck to you Avi … from the Punch.
