This year I volunteered to help out in the preparations for a fashion event in which professional athletes model in support of ending the cycle of domestic violence.  More than 500 well-known Washingtonians gathered for the Fifth Annual Walk This Way Fashion Event at the Embassy of Italy. This event has raised more than $87,000 thus far for Becky’s Fund’sMen of Code program. “Men of Code” works with high school athletes and coaches to raise awareness through preventative education surrounding domestic violence. Becky’s Fund is hoping to meet and exceed its original Walk This Way fundraising goal of $100,000 by continuing the fundraising through their online auction www.Charitybuzz.com/beckysfund running through December 3rd.

Comcast SportsNet’s Julie Donaldson acted as the Mistress of Ceremonies, opening the program reading aloud a letter from Vice President of the United States Joe Biden addressed to Becky’s Fund Founder, Becky Lee, commending the efforts of Becky’s Fund mission to end the cycle of domestic violence.

the closing speech

Guests were immersed in a night of Italian culture, celebrating 2013 – Year of Italian Culture in the US, an initiative featuring more than 300 events in over 50 American cities. They feasted on gourmet food buffets, passed Italian hoagies and flatbreads, gelato, macaroons, roaming raw bar, ice cold Peroni Nastro Azzurro, specialty scotch and tequila bars, limoncello aperitifs, macaroons, coffee and espresso stations rounded up with custom Becky’s Fund sheet cakes. To top off the evening, each guest was sent home with an Italian Culture Swag bag filled with Health and Beauty products as well as an Italian Cookie box filled to the brim with chocolate chip cookies, cannolis and Italian chocolates.

The event was amazing and like every year, they keep raising the bar. It was a great experience for me as a volunteer, plus as an added bonus, I got to hangout with some very cool Redskins players!
