Condolences…

Our sincere condolences to the families of those who died and were injured in yesterday’s rush hour Metro tragedy.  As a frequent rider of the Metro system in DC, I can’t even imagine the frightening feeling of how those Red Line riders felt when the train was struck or those within the jack knifed car.  I was actually on the Orange Line from Court House to Farragut West during that exact moment and remember hearing on the loudspeaker something like “All station managers must be alert to an emergency situation.  Expect delays on all lines.”  I thought, hmmm. That’s not very good.

It wasn’t until I’d reached level ground and saw everyone rushing in (and I mean rushing in) to the station and overheard the panicked conversations that I realized something really bad had happened.  Later, in a cab (and it took 20 minutes to find a cab at 7:30pm on 19th & K) later, I’d heard the number go from 2 dead, to 3 to 6, to 9, to 10 on the radio.

Again, thoughts and prayers go out to the victims’ families and friends, and thank you to those who were there (including the over 200 firemen) to assist in the recovery.

I ride the very same Red Line, at the very same time, every weekday. On that day, I happened to be waiting at Metro Center for someone who was running late. I got the AlertDC msg and stood… stunned. Thoughts and prayers are with all those affected.
