Contemporary Art Collectors Make Their SELECTions at the Washington Project for the Arts Gala and Art Auction
Last Saturday night contemporary art collectors came out in droves for SELECT, the Washington Project for the Arts (WPA) Gala and Art Auction. Held at the former Borders Books space on 1800 L Street NW (where Tuesday evening’s Entreprelooza will be) the ground floor was buzzing with everyone competing for mixed media, photographs, sculptures, paintings, you name it, the seriously curated pieces were truly prizes to be bid upon. With a “movable feast” being passed around and created by Chef Barton Seaver, guests were getting their fill of food and drinks at the various bars, one of which had shots of various liquors, perfect for combining with the raw bar. People walked around eyeing, then bidding, then walking away, then getting another martini or glass of champagne, then returning, circling like a hawk around those who may be in competition with their bids. It’s all part of the game of course.
Later there was a live auction and in between, cheerleaders (of both sexes) performed and helped to close up each of the auction sections. Everywhere we looked there was action all in the name of supporting WPA, an independent, non-profit 501 c(3) organization whose mission is to provide essential resources to support the creative spirit and success of regional artists. They present contemporary art through imaginative and provocative programs; and connect artists with the community in both traditional and unexpected ways.
Head of WPA Lisa Gold looked stunning in her one shoulder dress as she ran around, greeting guests, introducing artists and helping with the live auction.
