Don’t bawk, bawk, bawk at this turkey talk!

Even though I happen to be a vegetarian doesn’t mean I can’t help to promote the upcoming carnivorous holiday’s food shopping.  I am however, a huge proponent of buying from farmers who raise grass-fed pastured animals.

Where oh where will you buy YOUR turkey this Thanksgiving?  Here are a few Punch suggestions, but we welcome your comments, feedback and more ideas for our readers!

*Day Spring Farm in Middleburg, VA: Day Spring Farm offers Grass-Fed Beef, Lamb, Cornish Cross Broilers, Turkeys, and Pastured Eggs.  They raise all of their animals on clean pastures as naturally as possible. The farm offers meats by the cut or you may custom order whole, half and quarter animals. Chickens are sold whole only. Seasonal produce available as well (Emeril Lagasse chose this farm for his “Emeril Green Thanksgiving Day Show turkey).

On farm sales by appointment or weekends from Thanksgiving to Christmas from 9-5pm.

*Let’s Meat on the Avenue in Del Ray, VA:  This butchery provides free range turkeys range with no hormones, antibiotics or steroids. The minimally processed birds are delicious. They cost $3.25/pound and range from 14-25 pounds. While you’re visiting, also take a look at the Osso Bucco. The veal is grass fed, free range and again with no hormones, antibiotics or steroids.  If you are interested in rubs, there are plenty available.

As an economist, I love competition. Thus, if you are heading out to the beautiful village that is my home town to check out my sister’s organic food offerings, you may also want to check out another organic food supplier, The Home Farm Store. It is located in the heart of town - next to the one and only stop light.

Rumor has it that the store is backed by Cisco Systems founder, Sandy Lerner. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandra_Lerner

Also, if you want to kill two birds with one stone (pun intended), you can merge the Thanksgiving and Christmas spirit by also picking up your Christmas Tree at Lowelands Farm or http://www.lowelandsfarm.com/
    (next to Day Spring Farm)
