The Cocktail Primary Begins

The Cocktail Primary Begins

We all know that DC is a politico’s paradise.  This is a city that values sharp thinking, and smooth-talking with a side of scandal.  You can imagine my excitement when I heard about Elisir Ristorante’s Cocktail Primary on Wednesday.

This was my first event of the year, and what a way to start!  For those of you who don’t know, Elisir Ristorante opened about a month ago and is the newest fine-dining Italian restaurant for Chef Enzo Fargione.  In addition to their bistro lunch, the restaurant features both an a la carte dinner menu and nightly tasting menus.  Back to the booze!

At the Cocktail Primary, Steve Oshana, Elisir Mixologist and Bar Manager, showed guests his playful and witty side by updating his signature drinks (generally a play on the names of his close friends), with clever titles that corresponded with each of the Republican Primary Candidates.  Guests sipped on Steve’s delightfully crafted cocktails as they tried to determine the candidate inspiration.

My favorite drink of the night was the Bain of My Existence.  This drink is regularly on the menu at Elisir, and is a combination of gin, muddled rosemary, lemon, sugar and finished with a frothy mint foam.  I loved the clean, light and savory taste, think it would pair beautifully with seafood.  I felt obligated to move on after this drink because there were so many options, but would highly recommend it.  Steve promised this drink is on their regular menu and is listed as the Kentucky Irby.  My guess was that this drink was a nod to Mitt Romney.

My next taste was of the Last Night A Cartoon Saved My Life martini.  The drink was a take on a comment from Newt Gingrich, and I was excited to order this drink on the name alone.  It featured white rum, velvet falernum, mint and lime-infused spheres.  This would be perfect way to cool down for happy hour on a balmy July day.

In between beverages, I was able to sample a few bites of Chef Enzo’s food.  My two favorite bites of the night were the White Chocolate and Gorgonzola Sandwiches (pictured above).  Yes I have a sweet tooth, and no I didn’t like them solely for that reason.  The goat cheese provided a nice tang and cut down on the sweetness of the chocolate.  I though this was one of the most innovative bites I’ve had in a long time.

My second favorite taste was the chilled marinated salmon.  It had hints of fennel, and was topped chives, caviar, and a dab of sour cream.  I loved the crunch and slight sweetness of the edible shell.

My final drink of the evening was the New Hampshire of Bust.  This drink was a combination of vodka, peach blossom tea, pomegranate liqueur and topped with a lovely lavendar pate de fruit.  Fruity with a dazzling color and presentation.

It’s Friday afternoon, anybody ready for happy hour?  I obviously enjoyed myself at the event and don’t think you can go wrong ordering any of the cocktails on Elisir’s menu.  Steve and the bar staff are very friendly and happy to provide recommendations if you need drink tips.  I’m planning a trip back to sample more of the menu at Elisir over Restaurant Week (Jan. 9-15).  Do you have your reservation booked yet?!
