Habitat for Humanity Raises the Roof (and Funds) at Mansion on O

With radio stations playing round the clock Christmas tunes and Black Friday’s official launch of the holiday shopping season behind us, the holiday spirit is alive and well in Washington. It’s definitely time to deck the halls, and nowhere are the halls as decked as at the Mansion on O Street.  With portraits and hanging chandeliers overseeing mementos of every size, value and era, the private club boasts nutcrackers and Christmas trees in a festive, decadent way that only the Mansion on O can.

But what about those with no halls to deck? On Monday night, Habitat for Humanity of Washington, D.C., held its fourth annual silent auction and dinner at the Mansion. Nearly 100 people gathered to bid on items ranging from hot air balloon rides in Napa to a weeklong rental home in the West Indies. Other items included a 6 month membership to LA Boxing, theatre tickets, spa packages, portrait sessions, cooking classes, a private tour of the National Zoo, trapeze lessons and winery tastings. All in all, 55 items were donated for the auction. A raffle featured items such as a Baked & Wired gift certificate, a pearl necklace from local jeweler Rosebud by Nancy and a Trader Joe’s gift basket. In addition to 100% of the auction sales, 10% of all Mansion items sold—which range from the wild and the wonderful to the downright wacky—also went to Habitat.

For those who found themselves outbid on the items of their choosing, they still got to enjoy the Mansion‘s O’Dinnertini, with a delicious buffet feast and martinis a plenty.

“People don’t just have to wield a hammer to build a house,” said Kent Adcock, president of Habitat for Humanity of Washington, D.C. “They can use whatever gifts and tools they have to bring to the table.” And so with martinis and open pocketbooks, that’s exactly what the attendees of last night’s event did.

The evening raised near $7,000 from the Silent Auction, so thank you to everyone who participated and supported…
