I’m the Boss of Me

I was on the treadmill (yes, I wrote that because I proudly actually was … for the first time in months) this weekend watching CNN‘s Josh Levs report on a story of how now is the best time to actually start a business, when the economy is down.  Ironic, yes, but when economists look back on history and they have found that this action is what has helped to bring back the economy in past hard times.

As I wrote before, Americans have great spirit, ideas, creativity and innovation.  More than that, we have the ability to execute on these interests through partnerships, networking, and investing in solid ideas. True, going out on your own can be extremely daunting and not everyone has it in them to carry out working for herself.  You may have the perfect idea in your head, but through self actualization, know you lack the drive, discipline, or even passion to run your own business.  Lacking knowledge however, is no excuse. If you believe in yourself and your idea, you can make it happen by thoroughly doing your research, asking the right questions, finding mentors, investors, an advisory board, etc.  It may take some time to develop, as it should, but let’s face it.  You either are an entrepreneur, or you are not, and you will eventually have to come to terms with it, quit your job and make your dream come true, or vice versa.  As I’ve heard before, the hardest thing to be in the world, is something that you are not.

Speaking of entrepreneurs, there is a lady who always knew, even as a young girl, that she was going to be something great.  Her name is Lani Hay, the CEO of Lanmark Technology located in Vienna, VA.  She was recently named one of Fortune magazine’s Most Powerful Women Entrepreneurs. Lani started her government contracting professional services company 6 years ago after serving the Navy for almost a decade and earning an MBA.  She was born to parents who fled Saigon in Virginia and since she was a child, always knew she wanted a better life, and certainly to make an impact.  Lani is beautiful, well spoken, down to earth and has well, got her “you know what” together.  But sorry guys, she’s married to the contemporary artist Mark T. Smith, who not only created the official Olympic poster and artwork for 2008, but was recently commissioned by a local pro athlete, and he plays in rock band along with Urban Daddy‘s Jeff Dufour.
