Italian jewelry designer Giuliana Michelotti glided south from her New York home and Soho private showroom last week, as this is what you do when the Ambassador requests your presence in the name of “Italy in US 2013: Year of Italian Culture in the United States.” Last Thursday, she and host Ezio Mattiace showcased a small number of her absolutely exquisite, uniquely created, 100 %-handmade (so no two pieces are exactly the same) metal and stone necklaces, earrings, rings, bracelets, and pendants in the Italian furniture store Poltrona Frau (1010 Wisconsin Ave, NW). Guests, who were mostly made up of loyal Poltrona Frau clientele, friends of its CEO & President Ezio, and compatriots of the Italian Ambassador and the embassy mingled, nibbled on light bites, sipped Italian wine and wandered throughout the space admiring Giuliana’s precious work. I even got to model one of the rose gold necklaces which was shaped like a two piece collar.
Giuliana shared with me that the work is very time consuming because every single detail is handmade; she pointed to a necklace that held a number of silver shells, yes, every one, she twisted and melded until the shell was just as she liked. A perfectionist who loves to travel the world to far away places and gain inspiration from that which surrounds her, it seems her lengthy career will never be at a standstill. I could tell by the passion in her voice and energy in her eyes, that Giuliana is not only a successful artist, but a smart businesswoman who has found her calling and her journey will continue to be fascinating.
