With the Mandarin Hotel as the backdrop, Google, POLITICO and the Tory Burch Foundation hosted the Women Rule Summit: Marks of Leadership last Wednesday. As the final installment of the 2013 Women Rule, the event gathered a collective of influential women of various backgrounds and industries to lead discussions pertaining to leadership.

The day-long event included nine panel discussions and remarks from keynote speaker, Sylvia Matthews Burwell, Director of the White House Office of Management and Budget. A sample of some of the other notable speakers includes Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Anne-Marie Slaughter President/CEO of New America Foundation, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, U.S. Representative for Florida’s 27th congressional district Beverly Bond founder of BLACK GIRLS ROCK!, Nell Merlino Founder/President of Count Me In for Women’s Economic Independence, COSMOPOLITAN Editor-In-Chief Joanna Coles, Style Expert Stacy London, Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia Chief of Police Cathy Lanier and Fashion designer and philanthropist Tory Burch.

Some top takeaways from the day:

When it comes to networking:

-Come up with one or two things you need and find ways to efficiently drop it into the conversation

-At an event, know who is in the room, have a sense of who you might meet beforehand

-Get over your fear of self-promotion, talk about what it is you do and do well!

 

When it comes to getting a promotion/contract:

-Know your monetary value, it really is all about the bottom line in the world of business

-Make sure you have the work to back-up what you’re requesting

-Claim what work you’ve done!

 

When it comes to personal style at work:

-Having the right clothing is like having the right attitude to go through life

-Fashion is about how you feel, when you look good you feel good and perform better

On confidence:

-Say yes, then figure it out!

-Body posture is very important, show you are proud of your body with a proud stance
