Soupergirl to the Rescue
What is the first kind of food that pops into your mind when you peer through the window on a day like today? Do you, like me, think “This is a good day for soup“? Rain, snow, cold weather, and nasty dark dreary days always remind me of soup. If you are down in the dumps, feeling at 80% or even worse (trust me, almost everyone I know is in the process of getting sick or in the middle of being sick – tis the season after all), or if you just need a hug from Mama, then you probably also want soup. Actually a good friend of mine who is a guy, lives for soup. The first thing he orders on the menu is soup, sometimes he gets every soup on the menu just to taste. Soup defines comfort food and whether served hot or cold (in the summer), hearty and flavorful or light and brothy, it’s often what’s for dinner and lunch.
Enter Soupergirl, the locally-based organic vegan made-to-order daughter and mom team who have developed what I think to be the best damn soup around. Sara and mom Marilyn are “cooks” not “chefs” but that’s quite alright. Soup, the ulitimate comfort food doesn’t need to be “fancy” – it just needs to be good. And I personally want it to be healthy and taste delicious. I had the opportunity to taste a few flavors right before Thanksgiving and had I been able to take the liquids on the plane with me, I would have. The great thing about Soupergirl soups is that they use all local produce and you recognize every ingredient, there are no chemicals, no strange words where you think, Hmmm, what is that going to do to my body? And just like Mama’s makes her soup, you can picture Sara and Marilyn toiling away over their stoves, mixing and chopping, measuring and stirring carefully, thoughtfully, then tasting, adding a bit of this and a bit of that, until the recipe is just right.
My favorite, The Curried Sweet Potato Quinoa Renaissance Soup is out of this world by the way. I almost ate the entire container in one sitting. But I would not have felt badly and frankly, I didn’t feel bloated from too much sodium post-feeding like I usually do with soups, and I had that nice warmth in my belly.
Here’s more about the soups. You can purchase them to give as gifts. Seriously, why be selfish? It’s the gift giving season after all. Here are a few of their programs: Welcome New Baby, Get Well Soon (sign me up for about 10 of those), Welcome to Your New Home, and Just Because. Each comes with soup and a Soupergirl mug and other little fun items. You can also buy a subscription and receive salads.
Here’s how it works: www.thesoupergirl.com
