In September 1968, Congress authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to proclaim National Hispanic Heritage Week. The observance was expanded in 1988 to a month long celebration: September 15th – October 15th.  It is a time to celebrate the culture and traditions of U.S. residents who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean. To commemorate this important annual celebration of the Latino community, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) convenes more than 4,000 attendees from across the country at events held in Washington, D.C.

The 36th Annual CHCI Awards Gala was held Wednesday October 2 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. It is considered the largest and most prestigious gathering of Hispanic nonpartisan, public and private sector leaders in the nation who convene to network while celebrating the achievements of the Latino community. The evening’s festivities included musical entertainment by five time Grammy Award® and Latin Grammy®-winning international superstar Olga Tañón, remarks by figures of national prominence, and recognition of CHCI’s highest honors—the annual Chair’s Medallion Award and the CHCI Medallion of Excellence awardees. This year’s Medallion of Excellence awardees were actress, producer, director and philanthropist Salma Hayek-Pinault and president of the US Hispanic Leadership Institute, Dr. Juan Andrade, Jr. The CHCI Chair’s Medallion Award was presented to Dr. Francisco G. Cigarroa, chancellor of the University of Texas System.

Due to the government shutdown the President and the First Lady did not attend the gala. This was the first time in six years President Obama did not attend the Hispanic Caucus Institute gala. He first attended the event when he was running for president in 2008. Though his absence was noticed and noted by many attendees, the celebration continued late into the evening.
