Last night was The Gryphon VIP Preview Party, where guests got to experience the first “boutique sports bar” in Dupont. Classified as a gastropub, The Gryphon’s most redeemable qualities are its ambiance, menu, and 31 TVs. This is a place where a guy can watch sports and bring a girl on a date (two things that rarely go together).
A gastropub is typically known for its high-end food, and that’s what you can expect from Executive Chef Joseph Evans. The Gryphon adds a delectable and refined spin to some bar food classics. I sampled the Pimento cheese stuffed pepperdews, Korean braised short rib taco, cajun crawfish mac and cheese (awesome!), crawfish cake slider, and chocolate tort (very rich). Other interesting menu items include the gator bites (let’s be real, where else in DC can you try gator), Barbacoa tater tots con queso, and Cuban sandwich.
The Gryphon is notable for its food, but its also a place for the beer enthusiast. It prides itself as a combo of gastropub + upscale sports bar, and still provides the most essential part of being a sports bar (besides the television access) – the beer. They offer a full bar and while they only have four beers on tap (Miller Lite, Vienna Lager, Blue Moon, and Sam Adams Summer Seasonal), they still play host to over 30 kinds of bottles.
And what the establishment lacks in draft deals, it makes up for in aesthetics. The ceiling is plated tin, complemented with antler chandeliers, a great layout, purple bar lighting, and steer head decor (so very rustic of them). So this may not be your typical Redskins bar, but it is a great place to enjoy sports/new friends all week and weekend long. For any single guys looking to impress a girl and watch sports, head to The Gryphon to get the best of both worlds. Phenomenal location, great food, and inviting atmosphere.
The Gryphon opened March 2nd and is located at 1337 Connecticut Avenue, NW, Washington, DC. Phone: 202.827.8980 http://thegryphondc.com/
