VIDEO: A Day in the Life of a Steeplechase Horse (the 75th Running of the International Gold Cup is Saturday)
Saturday, October 20th marks the 75th anniversary of the running of the International Gold Cup steeplechase races out at Great Meadow in The Plains, Virginia. I don’t know about you, but I started going to spring and fall when I was like, well, right out of college. I literally found myself out there every season for about ten years and just like, that. I stopped. I had had enough of the carting back and forth and the buses and the collegiate-like antics which surrounded me in the spring. Then in the fall, I was like, wait, oh Gold Cup is this weekend? I don’t have an outfit…
Then a few years ago, I was asked to join some other media and blogger folks to be a Tailgate Judge during the fall Gold Cup, which in my humble opinion is much more favorable for a few reasons. The weather (don’t jinx us please) is the fine crisp friendly fall weather we Northern Virginians have grown to be accustomed to, the crowd tends to be older and more intimate, and aura is a bit more civilized. Oh, and the outfits are more of my liking. It’s a less “spring feverish” and more “serious-minded” traditional crowd, at least that’s my viewpoint. At any rate, I’ve fallen back in love with the autumn Gold Cup and while this year, I am not stuffing my face with some of the most delectable dishes and drinks for hours, I’ll be judging along with my boyfriend, Jason, HATS!
Yes. Hats. So dandies get dapper because we’ll be judging you.
And in honor of the Gold Cup, please enjoy this video “A Day in the Life of a Steeplechase Horse.” See you at Great Meadow ….
