Whiskey Walking in DC

By Punch Pulse Correspondent Niki Clark

Spring seemed to have finally sprung this past weekend in DC and as if to mark its celebratory arrival, the perfectly timed DC Whiskey Walk brought the crowds out in scores.

Benefitting local non-profits Becky’s Fund and the Washington Literacy Center, (drinking for a cause?  Yes, please!) the first annual walk took participants to eight venues around DuPont Circle, each of which featured food and beer specials, and of course, a different 1-ounce pour of Irish whiskey.

Starting at the lively James Hoban (how I have not been here before?) , “walkers” then strolled at their leisure to Board Room, Buffalo Billiards, Irish Whiskey, Mackey’s, Maddy’s, Madhatter and the Science Club. Unfortunately, I was not able to make them to all of them during the all-day event but there were many people we met along the way who had, and believe me, they seemed to be having LOTS of fun.  We certainly did.

I typically think of myself as a bourbon girl, but after the events of this week, I am definitely expanding into other whiskeys. The walk included tastes of Kilbeggan, Tryconnell, Redbreast 12 Year, Jameson 12 Year Special Reserve, Jameson Select Reserve Black Barrel, Jameson, Powers Gold Label and Powers 12 Year Special Reserve. It was the perfect entrée into my whiskey knowledge expansion plans. One must dream big.

As a unique addition to the festivities, Hinge (an app that gives an interesting twist to online dating) allowed fellow partygoers to find each other. After all, those who drink whiskey together, stay together. Right? And when the walkers finally decided to bring the evening to an end, Uber (an app that allows users to request a sleek, professionally driven black car or SUV on demand) had a $20 first time credit waiting for them. A great way to impress that potential date you just met via Hinge.
